German Painter, 1858-1925 German painter and writer. He grew up on his family's farm and tannery. As a child he showed interest in art, taking informal lessons in drawing from a local carpenter and caricaturing his primary school teachers. Corinth's father sent him to secondary school in the nearby city of K?nigsberg (now Kaliningrad), where he lived with his widowed aunt. A superstitious woman fond of story-telling, she possessed what Corinth later described as a coarse temperament and an unrestrained, 'demonic' humour. Walter Gramatte
Walter Gramatte (8 January 1897 in Berlin - 9 February 1929 in Hamburg) was a German expressionist painter who specialized in magic realism. He often painted with a mystical view of nature. Walter Gramatte died on 9 February 1929 of Intestinal Tuberculosis. His second wife Sonia married again, was then named Sophie Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatte and lived in Canada as a renowned musician. To remember her and her former husband Walter Gramatte „The Eckhardt-Gramatte-Foundatione was established in Winnipeg, Canada. Walter Gramatte's written posthumous works are preserved in the German National Museum. A special exhibition of his paintings, titled Rediscovered: Walter Gramatte 1897-1929, took place in Hamburg Ernst Barlach Haus from October 26, 2008 to February 1, 2009. This exhibition was organized by Kirchner Museum in Davos, Switzerland and the Ernst Barlach Haus in Hamburg, Germany.
Francis Hayman
English Painter, 1708-1776,English painter and illustrator. He was in London at the age of 10, and from 1718 until c. 1725 he was apprenticed to Robert Brown (d 1753), a decorative painter. From 1732 Hayman was employed as a scene painter at Goodman's Fields Theatre, where he painted allegorical works such as The King Attended by Peace, with Liberty and Justice Trampling on Tyranny and Oppression on the pit ceiling (destr.). He moved to Drury Lane Theatre in 1736, shortly before the Licensing Act closed Goodman's Fields. At Drury Lane he painted scenery for Thomas Arne's masque The Fall of Phaeton (1736) and was praised for his naturalistic landscapes. From the late 1730s he began accepting commissions for portraits and conversation pieces. His success in the field of portraiture rested on the dearth of good portrait painters in England at the time and his exploitation of a growing middle-class clientele. Hayman painted portraits of doctors, literary men and actors.
